Celebrating Chiropractic’s birthday and Dr. Walker has been practicing chiropractic care for 20 years

Every Sept. 18, chiropractors celebrate the birthday of their profession. Chiropractic care began in Iowa thanks to magnetic healer Daniel David Palmer. Conventional medicine at the time relied on heroic methods (bloodletting, vomiting, induced diarrhea and artificial ulcers) that posed considerable risks to patients, Palmer was interested in a safer alternative.

In 1895 janitor Harvey Lillard sought Palmer’s help. Lillard had been deaf for 17 years because of a displaced vertebra. Palmer thought he could restore Lillard’s hearing by fixing his spine. After two adjustments, Lillard’s hearing was fully restored. This event is said to have taken place on Sept. 18, 1895, though some question whether that is the exact date. Nonetheless, the adjustments marked the birth of chiropractic, and Sept. 18 has been traditionally celebrated as Chiropractic Day.

By 1928, chiropractors worldwide were commemorating Chiropractic Day with articles, radio broadcasts, and lectures emphasizing natural healing as an alternative to medications with harsh side effects.
